Read this quote the other day: "We can easily understand a child who is afraid of the dark; but the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light." - Plato
It reminds me of a verse of scripture from the book of Psalms - "For You will light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness." (18:28 )
This echoes within me.
Do we have darkness within us? If the apostle Paul prayed that "the eyes of our understanding be enlightened", then for light to be effective, darkness needs to be present.
Darkness? It could be self. Envy. Pride. It could be a vice. Drugs. Drink. Sex. Food. Self. Some type of stronghold. I heard a definition of stronghold recently that really makes sense - "anything done in excess."
Fear of light? Why not? When God calls, and He does call, He calls out of darkness, and into light. Not just any light, but a marvelous light. Is it a one time calling? Or is it constant? Daily?
For me, it's daily. The Psalmist wrote, "marvelous are Your works, and this my soul knows very well." What works? To will and to do His good pleasure. The One who knows me inside out. The One who is acquainted with all my ways. The One who knows the depths of my heart and loves me the same. He calls me out of darkness.
